African Women Storytellers Program

What is the Women Storytellers Program?

This program stems from the critical need for African women to tell their own stories from their unique perspectives. The initiative focuses on providing African women storytellers with both training and a platform to showcase their work. The creative industry in Rwanda and across the continent boasts a significant talent pool. However, there exists a skills gap preventing this talent from being transformed into professional opportunities, especially in fields such as photography and film, where women are often sidelined.

In addition, historically, many African narratives have been conveyed through non-African lenses, often male, resulting in stereotypical and one-sided portrayals. Through select masterclasses and workshops, we aim to equip women storytellers with the skills and tools to create authentic content that encompasses a wide range of experiences and perspectives.

PROGRAM DURATION

Who can apply?

1. This program is strictly open to women and those identifying as women, in alignment with our aim to empower female storytellers.

2. The applicants must fall within the age range of 20 to 50 years. This aims to promote intergenerational learning and storytelling.

3. The program is open to women of Rwandan descent, as well as women of other African descent who currently live and work in Rwanda.

4. Applicants should be active storytellers. This includes but is not limited to those working as photographers, videographers, filmmakers, designers, writers, producers, visual artists, and performing artists. A portfolio or evidence of previous work is required.

5. Our program celebrates diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment. We strongly encourage individuals who may feel their voices are underrepresented or undervalued in the realm of storytelling to apply.

6. Participants should be willing to commit to the duration of the program (5 months) and actively participate in all scheduled activities.

7. The applicant should have a clear intent to use the skills acquired to further their career in storytelling and have a passion for using storytelling as a medium for social change.

8. Since the program will be conducted in English, proficiency in English (both written and spoken) is required. This will ensure that all participants can effectively engage with the content and each other.

9. While formal education in a related field can be advantageous, it is not a prerequisite for application. We value practical experience and passion for storytelling just as much as academic achievement.
